Sunpu Castle

Sunpu Castle

Sunpu Castle (駿府城), also known as Fuchu Castle, is a historic castle site located in the center of Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was built in the 16th century by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, who later ruled Japan and spent his remaining years at this castle.

While most of the original castle buildings were demolished during the Meiji era, portions of the stone walls, moats, and a few gates remain. The East Gate and Tatsumi Yagura tower have been reconstructed, and the Momijiyama Toshogu Shrine, originally located within the castle grounds, has been relocated and is open to the public.

Today, the former castle grounds are maintained as Sunpu Castle Park, a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in spring. The park also houses the Sunpu Castle Museum, which exhibits artifacts and documents related to the castle’s history. The park occasionally hosts events such as the Shizuoka Festival and the Daidogei World Cup.
