Tottori Sand Dunes

Tottori City (鳥取) is the capital city of Tottori Prefecture, located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in western Japan. The city has a population of around 190,000 people and is known for its natural beauty, particularly its sand dunes. Home to Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport, Tottori is also the birthplace of Gosho Aoyama, the creator of the famous manga series “Detective Conan.”

One of the most popular attractions in Tottori City is the Tottori Sand Dunes, the largest sand dunes in Japan, stretching 16 kilometers east to west and 2 kilometers north to south along the coast. The dunes are a popular destination for tourists who enjoy hiking, sandboarding, and camel riding. The area is also home to the Sand Museum, which exhibits impressive sand sculptures with different themes each year.

Another popular attraction in Tottori City is the Jinpukaku mansion, a beautiful Western-style building built in the late 19th century. The mansion is surrounded by a large garden and is open to the public for tours.

Tottori City is also known for its local cuisine, particularly its fresh seafood caught off the coast of the Sea of Japan, such as crab and white squid. The city is also famous for its pears, especially the Nijisseiki (20th Century) pear. Additionally, Tottori boasts Misasa Onsen, one of the most prominent hot spring resorts in the prefecture and known for its world-class radon concentration.
