Kifune Shrine

Kibune (貴船), located in the Sakyo Ward of Kyoto City, is a scenic area nestled in the mountains of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is celebrated for the beautiful Kibune River and the Kifune Shrine, which is dedicated to the god of water, Takaokami-no-kami.

Kibune is especially popular in the summer when visitors flock to experience “kawadoko” or “kawayuka,” a unique dining tradition where they can savor traditional Japanese cuisine on platforms built over the refreshing river. The Kibune River adds to the area’s allure with its picturesque scenery, showcasing vibrant green maple leaves in summer and stunning fall foliage in autumn.

Besides its natural beauty and culinary delights, Kibune also offers several cultural attractions. The Kifune Shrine, with its main hall and the Okumiya shrine located further up the mountain path, is a popular destination for those seeking spiritual solace or a connection with nature.

The area also boasts various hiking trails, including the well-trodden Kurama-Kibune Trail. This trail connects Kibune to the neighboring Kurama area, passing through enchanting forests and tranquil temples along the way.

Kibune is easily accessible from Kyoto Station by bus or train, taking approximately one hour. Kawadoko cuisine often features local specialties like ayu (sweetfish) dishes and nagashi somen (flowing noodles). With its captivating blend of nature, culture, and culinary experiences, Kibune offers a unique and memorable getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle.
