The Kyoto Imperial Palace, also known as the Kyoto Gosho (京都御所), is a former residence of the Emperor of Japan located in the heart of Kyoto. The palace served as the seat of imperial power from the 8th century until the capital was moved to Tokyo in the late 19th century.
The palace complex is situated within the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden (京都御苑), a vast park covering approximately 65 hectares. The park is open to the public and encompasses numerous gardens, ponds, historical buildings, and other imperial residences such as the Sento Imperial Palace and the Omiya Imperial Palace, as well as the Kyoto State Guest House.
The main buildings of the palace complex were destroyed by fires and wars over the centuries, most notably during the Onin War. The current structures were reconstructed in 1855, adhering to traditional Japanese architecture and using authentic materials.
Visitors to the palace can take a guided tour of the grounds and buildings, which includes the Shishinden (紫宸殿), the most prestigious hall where important ceremonies like the enthronement ceremony were held, the Seiryoden (清涼殿), the Emperor’s residence and the most important public space, and the Kogosho (小御所), the Imperial Audience Hall. The tours are led by knowledgeable guides who provide historical context and insights into the significance of the palace.
