Tofukuji Temple

Tofukuji Temple (東福寺) is a prominent Zen Buddhist temple located in Kyoto, Japan. It was founded in 1236 during the Kamakura period by Regent Kujo Michiie and is considered one of the “Kyoto Gozan” or “Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto.” Tofukuji Temple is renowned for its beautiful gardens, which feature a variety of plants, ponds, and rock formations, as well as its impressive architecture and historical significance.

The temple complex covers a vast area and includes several notable buildings. The Butsuden (Buddha Hall), which houses the principal image of worship, Shakyamuni Buddha, is the central structure of the temple. The Sanmon Gate, designated as an Important Cultural Property, is another impressive structure, known for its intricate carvings and statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and the Sixteen Arhats enshrined within.

One of the most captivating features of Tofukuji Temple is its stunning autumn foliage. The Tsutenkyo and Gaunkyo Bridges, spanning a valley within the temple grounds, offer breathtaking views of the vibrant fall colors, attracting countless visitors each year.

The temple also houses other important structures, such as the Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters), a designated Important Cultural Property rebuilt during the Muromachi period, and the Zendo (Meditation Hall), where Zen meditation is practiced and open to the public. The Kaisando Hall enshrines the temple’s founder, Shoichi Kokushi (Enni Ben’en).
