Fukuoka Castle Ruins

Fukuoka Castle

Fukuoka Castle Ruins (福岡城跡), also known as Maizuru Castle (舞鶴城), is a historical site located in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. The castle was originally built in the early 17th century by Kuroda Nagamasa, the lord of Fukuoka, and played an important role in the defense of Kyushu during the Edo period.

The castle buildings were demolished after the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century due to the abolition of the feudal domains. Today, only the ruins remain, such as the large and small Tenshu (keep) foundations, moats, and stone walls. Visitors can explore the site and enjoy the beautiful views of the surrounding city.

The ruins are also home to several important cultural properties, including the Tamon Yagura watchtower, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The tower is one of the few surviving examples of castle architecture from the Edo period, and offers a glimpse into the history and culture of Japan during this time.
