Hakata Gion Yamakasa

The Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a festival held in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It takes place annually from July 1st to 15th and is known as a summer tradition in Hakata.

The main feature of the Gion Yamakasa is the “Oiyama,” where men carry a portable shrine called “kakiyama” (weighing about 1 ton) through the streets. This powerful spectacle is a moving sight.

In addition to Oiyama, Gion Yamakasa also features exhibitions of decorative floats called “kazariyama” and children’s Yamakasa where children participate.

The Gion Yamakasa has a long history, dating back over 700 years. It is said to have started as a prayer for warding off epidemics, and that spirit is still carried on today.
