Shofukuji Temple

Sofukuji Temple

Shofukuji Temple (聖福寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City, Japan. It was founded in 1195 by the monk Eisai, who also introduced the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism to Japan. Shofukuji Temple is considered the first Zen temple in Japan and is a designated National Treasure. It has a long and rich history, and has been the site of many important events and ceremonies throughout the centuries.

The temple belongs to the Daitoku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. The temple grounds are home to several important buildings, including the Butsuden (Buddha Hall), the Hatto (Dharma Hall), and the Hojo (Abbot’s Quarters). The Butsuden houses a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, while the Hatto is used for lectures and other Buddhist teachings.

One of the most notable features of Shofukuji Temple is its architecture, which is in the Zen style (karayo), incorporating elements of Chinese architecture. The temple was built in this style to reflect the influence of Chinese Zen Buddhism, which was brought to Japan by Eisai.
