The Akita Museum of Art (秋田県立美術館) is an art museum located in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan. The museum was newly opened in 2012 (the former Akita Prefectural Art Museum opened in 1967) and is known for its collection of modern and contemporary Japanese art, particularly the works of Akita-born artist Tsuguharu Fujita, based on the Hirano Masakichi Collection.
The museum’s collection includes over 5,000 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and textiles. The Fujita Tsuguharu collection covers a wide range of his works, from elegant female portraits in the Art Deco style to religious paintings from his later years. The mural “Events of Akita,” which is over 20 meters long, is particularly impressive. The museum also exhibits many works by other renowned Japanese artists, such as Shiko Munakata, Ikuo Hirayama, Yuzo Saeki, and Tetsuro Wan.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Akita Museum of Art also hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing the works of diverse artists from Japan and abroad.
The museum building was designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. Located adjacent to Senshu Park and overlooking the Omono River, the building features a simple yet striking design based on water and concrete.
The Akita Museum of Art is a popular destination for art enthusiasts and tourists alike and is considered one of the premier art museums in the Tohoku region.
