The Akita Kanto Festival is an annual festival held in Akita City, Akita Prefecture, Japan, from August 3rd to 6th. It is one of the largest festivals in the Tohoku region and has been designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property by the Japanese government.
The festival’s highlight is the performers’ skillful balancing and parading of long bamboo poles called “kanto,” adorned with numerous paper lanterns. The kanto can reach up to 12 meters in length and weigh approximately 50 kilograms. These kanto are designed to resemble rice plants and are believed to bring a good harvest and ward off evil spirits.
During the festival, various other events take place, including traditional music and dance performances, taiko drumming, and fireworks displays. Food stalls and vendors line the streets, offering traditional Japanese festival foods and souvenirs.
The Akita Kanto Festival attracts visitors from all over Japan and around the world. It is a vibrant and colorful celebration of Japanese culture and tradition, making it a must-see event for anyone visiting Akita City during the summer months.
