Kunozan Toshogu (久能山東照宮) is a Shinto shrine located on the top of Mount Kuno in Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and is one of the most important Toshogu shrines in Japan.
The shrine was built in 1617 by Ieyasu’s son, Tokugawa Hidetada, and has since been reconstructed several times. The shrine complex includes several buildings, including the main hall, the worship hall, and the stable, which houses the famous “Sacred White Horse” that Ieyasu rode during his lifetime.
The shrine is known for its elaborate decorations and carvings, which feature intricate details and gold leaf.
Kunozan Toshogu is located on the top of a mountain, and visitors can reach the shrine by climbing a long stone staircase. The climb can be steep and challenging, but the panoramic views of Shizuoka City and the Pacific Ocean from the top are well worth the effort.
