Chugoku Region

Chugoku

Chugoku region (中国地方) is a region located in western Honshu, the largest island of Japan. The region consists of five prefectures: Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Shimane, Tottori, and Okayama.

Chugoku means “central country” in Japanese and refers to the fact that the region is located between the Kansai region to the east and the Kyushu region to the west.

The Chugoku region has a rich history and culture, with several notable attractions such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The region is also famous for its cuisine, including Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki (a savory pancake), Izumo soba (buckwheat noodles), and oysters from Hiroshima Bay.
