The tsunami was caused by an earthquake with an epicenter in Taiwan.

Initial Report

As of 9:02 AM on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, a tsunami warning has been issued for the Okinawa Main Island, Miyako Island, and Yaeyama Island regions.

If you are in coastal areas or near rivers, please evacuate to higher ground or a safe building immediately.

Tsunamis can strike multiple times. The second or third wave can be higher than the first.

Do not leave your safe location until the warning has been lifted.

Evacuation Tips:

  • Do not evacuate by car. Evacuate on foot.
  • If you are in a coastal area or near a river, leave immediately.
  • Evacuate to a safe place such as higher ground or a tsunami evacuation building.
  • Check the evacuation checklist before you evacuate.
  • Stay in touch with your family and community and evacuate together.
