Kamakura Conducts Experiment to Address Overtourism by Encouraging Walking to the Great Buddha during Golden Week

On May 3rd and 4th, 2024, Kamakura City conducted a demonstration experiment to encourage people to walk to popular tourist spots such as Hase Temple and the Great Buddha of Kamakura as an overtourism measure. This was conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Kamakura City, and during the period, participants were encouraged to walk from Kamakura Station instead of Hase Station on the Enoden Line.

The purpose of this experiment is to reduce congestion and disperse tourists. In recent years, Kamakura has seen a rapid increase in the number of domestic and international tourists, resulting in heavy crowding, especially during GW and the summer season. Therefore, we are studying measures to alleviate congestion so that both tourists and local residents can spend their time comfortably.

During the experiment period, maps showing walking routes were distributed around Kamakura Station. The maps included not only the shortest routes, but also recommended routes around scenic spots.

This experiment suggests the effectiveness of walking as a countermeasure against overtourism. Similar experiments may be conducted in other tourist destinations in the future.
