Okinawa

Okinawa Taketomijima

Okinawa (沖縄) is a Japanese prefecture located in the southwestern part of the country, consisting of a chain of islands. The capital city is Naha. It has a population of approximately 1.4 million people, and its economy is largely based on tourism, agriculture, and fishing.

Okinawa has a unique culture and history, influenced by both Japanese and Ryukyuan (the indigenous people of the islands) traditions. The islands were an independent kingdom known as the Ryukyu Kingdom until they were annexed by Japan in the late 19th century.

Okinawa is known for its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and unique cuisine, which incorporates local ingredients such as pork, seaweed, and bitter melon. The islands are also home to important cultural sites, including Shuri Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was the former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
