Horyuji Temple

Horyuji Temple (法隆寺), located in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, Japan, is one of the oldest temples in Japan and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its exceptional cultural and historical value. The temple was founded in 607 AD by Prince Shotoku (聖徳太子), a prominent figure in Japanese history who played a crucial role in promoting Buddhism and establishing diplomatic relations with China.

Horyuji Temple is renowned for its extensive collection of early Japanese Buddhist art and architecture, showcasing the remarkable craftsmanship and artistic achievements of the Asuka and Nara periods. Getting there

By Train

From JR Nara Station:

  • Take the JR Yamatoji Line to Horyuji Station (12-13 minutes, 230 yen)
  • From Horyuji Station, walk about 20 minutes or take a 5-minute bus ride

From Kintetsu Nara Station:

  • Take the Kintetsu Nara Line to Yamato-Saidaiji Station
  • Transfer to the JR Yamatoji Line to Horyuji Station

By Bus

From JR or Kintetsu Nara Station:

  • Take bus number 98 to Horyuji-mae bus stop
  • Journey time: About 1 hour
  • Cost: 770 yen
  • Frequency: One bus per hour

From Horyuji Station:

  • Take local bus number 72 to Horyujisando bus stop (5 minutes, 190 yen)
  • Buses depart every 20 minutes
