Gion Matsuri (祇園祭) is a traditional festival that takes place annually throughout the month of July in Kyoto, Japan. It is one of the most famous festivals in Japan, attracting millions of visitors from around the world.
The festival’s origins can be traced back to the 9th century when a series of natural disasters struck Kyoto. The festival was created as a way to appease the gods, particularly Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the god of storms and pestilence, and to pray for the well-being and prosperity of the city.
The highlight of the festival is the Yamaboko Junko (山鉾巡行), a grand procession of floats. There are two Yamaboko Junko parades: the Saki Matsuri (前祭) on July 17th and the Ato Matsuri (後祭) on July 24th. These magnificent floats, some reaching up to 25 meters in height, are adorned with intricate carvings, tapestries, and other decorations, showcasing Kyoto’s rich artistic heritage.
The festival also features the Yoiyama (宵山), a series of evening events held on the three nights before each parade. During Yoiyama, the streets around Yasaka Shrine are illuminated with lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese street food, browse stalls selling crafts and souvenirs, and experience the lively atmosphere of the festival.
In addition to the Yamaboko Junko and Yoiyama, Gion Matsuri also includes various other events and activities, such as the Mikoshi Arai (神輿洗), a ritual cleansing of the portable shrines, and the Hanagasa Junko (花傘巡行), a procession of women carrying colorful parasols.
Gion Matsuri is a beloved and important cultural event in Kyoto, and is recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The festival offers visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese traditions and culture, making it a highlight of any visit to Kyoto in the summer months.
