Kyoto National Museum

Kyoto National Museum

Kyoto National Museum (京都国立博物館) is one of the most important museums in Japan, located in Kyoto. It was established in 1889 as the Imperial Museum and houses a vast collection of Japanese art, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, and calligraphy.

The museum’s collection is organized into several categories, showcasing prehistoric and ancient art, decorative arts, Buddhist art, and Japanese painting. Among the most famous items in the collection is the “Choju-jinbutsu-giga” (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans), considered a national treasure and a masterpiece of Japanese art.

The museum consists of two main buildings: the Honkan, also known as the Meiji Kotokan, built in 1895 and designated as an Important Cultural Property, and the Heisei Chishinkan, a newer building opened in 2014 with a modern exhibition space.

The museum grounds also feature a Japanese garden called “Teien ‘Kujo-ike'” with a teahouse named “Tan’an.”

In addition to its permanent collection, the Kyoto National Museum hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing works by both Japanese and international artists. The museum also offers guided tours and educational programs for visitors of all ages.
