Sagano Railway

Sagano Railway

Sagano Romantic Train (嵯峨野観光鉄道), officially known as the Sagano Scenic Railway, is a sightseeing train that operates between Torokko Saga Station and Torokko Kameoka Station along the Hozugawa River in Kyoto, Japan. The railway is renowned for its beautiful scenery, particularly the picturesque Hozukyo Gorge, and is a popular tourist attraction in the area.

The train ride takes approximately 25 minutes one-way and offers passengers a delightful journey through the scenic Kyoto countryside. The route winds through lush forests, crosses historic bridges, and provides stunning views of the Hozugawa River and the surrounding mountains. Passengers can also catch glimpses of traditional Japanese houses and temples along the way.

The train offers both open-air and enclosed carriages, allowing passengers to choose their preferred seating based on the weather and personal preference. The open-air carriages, especially “The Rich” and “The View Rich” cars with no windows, offer a more immersive experience, enabling passengers to feel the fresh air and fully appreciate the surrounding beauty.

In addition to the regular train service, Sagano Romantic Train operates special seasonal trains. During the winter months, the Winter Illumination Train runs with special decorations and lighting, creating a magical atmosphere. During the autumn foliage season, special trains are operated to allow passengers to enjoy the vibrant colors of the autumn leaves illuminated at night.

Reservations are highly recommended, especially on weekends, holidays, and during peak tourist seasons, as the train can get very crowded. Torokko Saga Station is conveniently located about a 5-minute walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station, while Torokko Kameoka Station is about a 20-minute walk from JR Umahori Station.

For a different perspective of the Hozugawa River, visitors can also consider taking the Hozugawa River Boat Ride, which follows the same route as the train but on the water.
