Zeniarai Benten (銭洗弁天), formally known as Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine (銭洗弁財天宇賀福神社), is a Shinto shrine located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, who is known as the goddess of music, wealth, and knowledge.
The shrine’s name, “Zeniarai Benten,” means “money-washing Benzaiten.” This is because it is believed that if you wash your money in the spring water that flows in front of the small shrine in the cave, your wealth will increase. Visitors to the shrine can purchase a small bamboo basket to hold their coins while washing them in the water.
The shrine complex includes several buildings and structures, such as a main hall, a torii gate at the entrance, and several smaller shrines dedicated to other deities. The shrine is surrounded by a beautiful natural setting, with lush greenery and views of the surrounding mountains.
