Kawagoe Castle is located in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, and was built by Uesugi Mochitomo Ogiya in 1457.
During the Edo period (1603-1867), the castle was considered important as a northern defense of Edo, and the castle was owned by the shogunate’s top vassals from generation to generation.
However, the castle was demolished after the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), and only the entrance, the hall, and the relocated and reconstructed samurai guardrooms remain today.
Kawagoe Castle and Kochi Castle are the only castles in Japan where the hall of the Honmaru Goten still exists, and are designated as important cultural assets by Saitama Prefecture.
