Glover Garden

Glover Garden

Glover Garden (グラバー園) is a popular tourist attraction located on a hillside overlooking Nagasaki City, Japan. It is named after Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant who played an important role in the development of modern Japan. In 2015, Glover Garden was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining.”

Glover arrived in Nagasaki in the mid-19th century and became involved in the shipping and trading industry. He played a key role in introducing Western technology and culture to Japan, and was a close friend and advisor to several influential Japanese figures, including the politician and statesman, Okubo Toshimichi.

Glover Garden was established in the 19th century as a residential area for Western merchants and diplomats, and today, it is a beautiful park filled with Western-style homes and gardens. Visitors can explore the various buildings and exhibits, which showcase the history and culture of the area and the role of Westerners in modernizing Japan.

One of the most popular attractions in Glover Garden is the Glover Residence, which was built in 1863 and is considered to be one of the oldest Western-style houses in Japan. The house is filled with antique furniture, artwork, and other artifacts from the 19th century, and offers a glimpse into the life of Glover and other Westerners in Nagasaki at the time.

Other popular attractions in Glover Garden include the Ringer House, which was built in the early 20th century and features a beautiful English-style garden, the Alt House, which was originally built as a consulate and now houses a museum dedicated to Glover’s life and legacy, the Freemason Lodge, and the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Museum. The garden also offers stunning views of Nagasaki Port and Mount Inasa.

Glover Garden regularly hosts various events, and its night illuminations are particularly popular due to the beautiful night view.
