Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社), also known as Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the Gion district of Kyoto, Japan. It is believed to have been established in 656 and is dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, his wife Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto, and their eight children, collectively known as Yahashira-no-mikogami. Susanoo-no-Mikoto is associated with the sea, storms, and agriculture.

Yasaka Shrine is one of the most famous and important shrines in Kyoto, celebrated for its beautiful architecture and traditional Japanese design. The shrine complex includes several buildings, including the main hall (Honden), designated as an Important Cultural Property, the worship hall (Haiden), and the stage hall (Kaguraden). The shrine is also famous for its numerous lanterns, which are lit up during the annual Gion Festival, taking place throughout the month of July.

The Gion district surrounding Yasaka Shrine is one of the most renowned geisha districts (hanamachi) in Japan, where geisha are referred to as “Geiko.” It is a popular tourist destination, featuring numerous traditional restaurants, shops, and teahouses, as well as several museums and theaters dedicated to geisha culture and the history of the area.
