Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station

Tokyo Station (東京駅) is a major transportation hub and iconic landmark located in the Marunouchi district of Tokyo, Japan. It is one of the busiest train stations in the world, serving over 450,000 passengers daily and offering access to various train lines, including the JR Yamanote Line, which circles the city and connects to major tourist destinations, and the Shinkansen bullet train, providing high-speed service to cities throughout Japan.

The station was originally built in 1914 and underwent a significant renovation in 2012, restoring its original red brick facade and adding new facilities. The renovated Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building (東京駅丸の内駅舎), designed by Kingo Tatsuno, is now a designated Important Cultural Property. The station complex also includes the Yaesu Station Building (八重洲口駅舎) and the Tokyo Station Hotel (東京ステーションホテル).

Within the station, visitors can find a wide range of amenities, including several underground shopping areas like “Tokyo Character Street” for character goods, numerous restaurants, a tourist information center, and baggage storage services. The “Ekiben-ya Matsuri” offers a vast selection of ekiben (train bento boxes) from all over Japan, a must-try for food enthusiasts and train travelers.

Adjacent to Tokyo Station, the KITTE building, a renovated former post office, houses shops, restaurants, and a rooftop garden with scenic views of the Marunouchi Station Building.

Tokyo Station is a gateway to many of Tokyo’s top attractions, including the Imperial Palace, Ginza shopping district, Asakusa neighborhood, Marunouchi Building, Nihonbashi Bridge, and Tokyo International Forum, all within walking distance. Its unique blend of historical charm and modern convenience makes it a must-visit destination in itself.
