Chuzenji Temple

Chuzenji Temple

Chuzenji Temple (中禅寺) is a Buddhist temple located in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The temple was founded in 784 by the Buddhist monk Shodo Shonin (勝道上人) and is considered one of the oldest temples in Nikko.

Chuzenji Temple is located in a picturesque setting, surrounded by tall cedar trees and overlooking Lake Chuzenji, which was named after the temple. The temple complex features several buildings, including a main hall, a pagoda, and a bell tower. Inside the main hall, visitors can view a statue of Thousand-Armed Kannon (Senju Kannon), the principal object of worship. The statue, also known as Tachiki Kannon, is said to have been carved by Shodo Shonin himself from a single piece of katsura wood.

Chuzenji Temple is also known for its beautiful gardens, which include a pond with koi fish and a waterfall. Visitors can stroll around the grounds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, taking in the sights and sounds of nature.

Chuzenji Temple can be reached by Tobu Bus Nikko from Nikko Station or other locations in the area. The temple is also located near the popular Chuzenji Onsen hot spring resort, offering visitors a chance to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
